Seven researchers from the Institute have earned a spot among the world’s top 2% of scientists, according to the latest Stanford University rankings, an international benchmark for research impact.
The 2025 list, compiled by Stanford and publisher Elsevier, analyzes global citation data across disciplines from the previous year to spotlight scientists whose work drives significant influence. Using standardized Scopus-based indicators, the rankings recognize both career-long achievement and standout contributions over the past year.
Institute Director Arun Sanyal, M.D., ranked among the top 500 researchers worldwide and landed in the Top 50 for both his career and single-year impact in gastroenterology. Joining him in the Top 50 for gastroenterology for 2024 is Jasmohan Bajaj, M.D., reflecting the Institute’s depth of expertise in liver and digestive health research.
Also honored among the world’s top 2% were Institute co-founder R. Todd Stravitz, M.D., Chief Clinical Officer Richard Sterling, M.D., Chief Scientific Officer Saul Karpen, M.D., Ph.D., Director for Alcohol Sciences Juan Pablo Arab, M.D., and M. Shadab Siddiqui, M.D. (now with the University of Virginia).
Together, these VCU scholars reinforce the Institute’s global reputation for advancing science that shapes the future of medicine.
