Institute hepatology specialist honored as region’s “Top Docs”

April 2023

Richmond Magazine’s annual “Top Docs” list, released this month, recognized four of the extraordinary hepatology specialists with the Stravitz-Sanyal Institute for Liver Disease and Metabolic Health.

Arun Sanyal, M.D., institute director and professor of medicine, and the institute’s chief clinical officer, Richard Sterling, M.D., professor and medical director of the HIV-Liver Disease Service, were among the more than 210 VCU Health physicians honored on the list. Nearly 500 medical professionals were selected by their peers using a Richmond Magazine online survey.

The institute’s other honored hepatologists are also members of its clinical team: Hannah Lee, M.D., professor and co-director of the Liver Tumor Program; and Scott Matherly, M.D., associate professor and medical director for the Digestive Health Service.

Sanyal, Sterling and Lee were among those recognized in the 2022 “Top Docs” list. The 2021 list did not include the hepatology category.

VCU Health physicians were named under a wide range of specialties, from addiction medicine, allergy and immunology to diabetes, pain management, gastroenterology and neurology. Doctors from Hume-Lee Transplant Center, Massey Cancer Center, Pauley Heart Center and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU were on the list.

This special recognition highlights the compassionate care provided by VCU health care professionals as well as the innovative technology and inclusive approaches they use to treat patients. Find the entire VCU list of 2023 “Top Docs” online.
