About biorepositories/biobanks
Biorepositories sit in the translational space, linking clinical research, laboratory research and patient care. They facilitate research by providing high quality, well-annotated biospecimens and data sets.
About the Biorepository and sample resource
The SSI biorepository houses samples and data from consented VCU/VCUHS patients. Protected health information and personally identifiable information are never released to investigators. Additionally, we provide clinical study sample processing and storage for research studies across the institute. The biorepository assists with study start-up, consulting on IRB documents, protocols and procedures. We also provide histology services. The biorepository is ISO20387, ISO9001, OECD, HTA, FDA 21CFR part II, GLP, GCP, GDPR, and HIPAA compliant.
Samples in the biorepository
Sample types include tissue, blood and blood products, saliva, stool, urine and swabs. Samples are labeled with coded identifiers and barcoded. All freezers have triple back-up systems and 24/7 monitoring to ensure sample quality. Our extensive laboratory information management system holds data on a dedicated and secure VCU server, and it is password-protected with limited access. Samples are stored as multiple aliquots and are never thawed. All samples are processed with fully documented standard operating procedures. Data is backed up daily to prevent loss.

Request samples and services
Any faculty-level research may request samples. Non-institute researchers must have a SSI collaborator on the project. Requests will be evaluated for research impact, alignment with SSI priorities, and translational value.
